II. Irreversible decisions

7.Protect irreversible decisions

Some decisions cannot be undone. Partner, children, major financial commitments, neglected health: how to approach them with the right caution.

The principle

Some decisions cannot be undone. These deserve more time, more attention, and more caution than any other choice.

Why it matters

Not all decisions carry the same weight. Choosing what to have for lunch is reversible in seconds. Choosing whether to have a child, move to another country, accept a major financial commitment — these are decisions that change the trajectory for decades.

The temptation is to treat all decisions with the same urgency. The digital system we live in rewards speed of response. But applying the speed of reversible decisions to irreversible ones is one of the most costly mistakes you can make.

Irreversible decisions have a critical asymmetry: the cost of getting it wrong is much higher than the benefit of deciding quickly. When the mistake accumulates slowly over time, you only notice when the damage is already large.

Learning to distinguish between reversible and irreversible decisions is one of the most useful meta-skills there is.

Common mistakes

  • Making irreversible decisions under artificial time pressure
  • Never sleeping on an important decision
  • Being swept away by the enthusiasm of the moment
  • Not consulting people with direct experience of the decision you're about to make
  • Confusing "hard to reverse" with "impossible to reverse"

Practical application

Before an important decision, ask: is it reversible or not? If the answer is no, build a deliberate process: wait at least 24-48 hours, write the pros and cons, consult people who have already lived the same situation.

Use a simple rule: for decisions you cannot undo within a week, never decide on the same day the opportunity arises.

Guiding question

If this decision turned out to be wrong in five years, how difficult would it be to correct?
