Why it matters
We are social animals. Our values, habits, and standards unconsciously adapt to those of the people around us. Spending time with ambitious people increases your ambition. Spending time with passive people reduces it.
The partner you choose is the single relational decision with the greatest impact on your life. It influences the home environment, the values passed on to children, your daily mental health, and how you handle crises.
Colleagues and partners change your professional standard. Friends change your personal standard. Not all of these effects are conscious — many operate below the threshold of awareness.
This isn't about being cynical and calculating every relationship. It's about being aware that relationships are not neutral: they either push you forward or hold you back.

Take an inventory of the ten people you spend the most time with. Ask honestly: after these interactions, do I feel more energized or less? More confident or less? Closer to my goals or further away?
Actively invest in relationships that make you grow. The best relationships often don't cultivate themselves — they require initiative, dedicated time, and care.
