II. Irreversible decisions

9.Don't ignore reality

Ignoring reality doesn't change it. It makes it worse. Problems faced early cost less — in every sense — than problems faced late.

The principle

Ignoring reality doesn't change it. It makes it worse. Problems faced early cost less — in every sense — than problems faced late.

Why it matters

The human brain is built to reduce short-term anxiety, not to maximize long-term results. Ignoring a problem feels better immediately. But unaddressed problems compound: they grow over time.

A health problem ignored for years can become chronic. Debt ignored accumulates with interest. A deteriorating relationship doesn't recover on its own. A dysfunctional work situation consumes energy that could go elsewhere.

Facing reality early is also an act of respect toward the future. Tomorrow's 'you' will pay the cost of today's denials. Every postponed problem is a cost transfer to a future version of yourself.

The ability to look reality in the face — even when uncomfortable — is one of the rarest and most valuable skills there is.

Common mistakes

  • Postponing difficult conversations hoping the situation resolves itself
  • Ignoring physical signals of illness for months or years
  • Continuing to do something clearly dysfunctional to avoid admitting the mistake
  • Reacting with defensive optimism instead of realistic analysis
  • Not asking for honest feedback to avoid uncomfortable information

Practical application

Do a monthly audit of the situations you're avoiding. Write on paper: what am I postponing? What do I know is true but prefer not to look at? Often the simple act of writing it down reduces the power of denial.

When you identify a real problem, take the minimum necessary step to address it — not the perfect plan, but the first concrete action. Breaking inertia is the hardest part.

Guiding question

What do I already know is true but am choosing not to look at?
