II. Irreversible decisions

8.Choose where you live carefully

Where you live is one of the most underestimated decisions of adult life. The city and country you're in shapes your social network, opportunities, and who you become.

The principle

Where you live is one of the most underestimated decisions of adult life. The geographical and social context you're immersed in shapes who you become.

Why it matters

Most people don't truly choose where to live. They stay where they grew up, or move for a job without evaluating the long-term impact. Place becomes a habit, not a choice.

Yet the city and country you live in determine: the network of people you can meet, the professional opportunities accessible to you, the cost of living relative to your resources, the quality of services and environment.

The people around you change who you are. If you're the most ambitious person in your group, the group pulls you down. If you're the least skilled, the group pushes you up. Social context is an invisible but continuous force.

This doesn't mean everyone should move. It means the decision deserves explicit reflection — not indifference.

Common mistakes

  • Never actively considering the option of moving
  • Evaluating a city only for work and cost of living, ignoring the social network
  • Staying in a dysfunctional place out of fear of change
  • Idealizing the move as a solution to all problems
  • Not considering the impact of distance on relationships and family

Practical application

Every few years, do an audit of your city. Ask: do the people around me push me to grow? Are the opportunities here aligned with what I want to build? Is the cost of living sustainable?

If you're evaluating a move, do a trial. Live in the place for at least three months before making a permanent decision. First impressions deceive.

Guiding question

Does the place I live bring me closer to or further from the life I want to build?
